We celebrate Juneteenth on Friday.
Slavery did not end with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It took two years after the Civil War ended, when General Granger traveled to Gavelston, Texas to read General Order Number 3, announcing to the formerly enslaved people that they were now free.
In 2021, President Biden signed into law legislation recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday, our second Independence Day.
